Plant It Once, Benefit for Decades: Why Trees Are the Lowest-Maintenance Investment in Your Yard
Plant once, enjoy for life.
If there’s one thing customers consistently ask us for at Tallahassee Nurseries, it’s low-maintenance plants. And I get it. Life is busy. You might love the idea of gardening, but time is limited.
Most people don’t realize, trees are the lowest-maintenance plants you can add to your landscape. Once established, they require very little—and they give back for decades.
Trees have deep root systems, long lifespans, and a high tolerance for drought, heat, and seasonal swings. They’re built to handle the unpredictable extremes of our climate.
What Low Maintenance Really Means
For me, low maintenance comes down to a few things:
How often do I have to think about a plant?
How often do I have to do something to keep it looking pretty?
How often do I have to do something to keep it healthy?
How often do I have to replace it?
Most plants need regular, yearly input to look their best. Eventually, a well-placed tree does not.
There is, of course, an establishment period. For trees, that’s usually one to two years, with the main focus on watering through summer heat. That can be simplified with a hose timer or irrigation.
After that, a healthy tree in the right place largely takes care of itself.
Why Trees Work So Well Here
In North Florida, we sit at the divide between the northern temperate climate and the sub-tropical climate of Central and South Florida. We deal with a wide range of unpredictable conditions—cold snaps, heat, drought, heavy rain, hurricanes. That makes plant selection tricky.
The deep roots and sturdy trunks of well placed trees are uniquely able to handle those weather fluctuations. More than that, they help stabilize the conditions around them.
They cast shade that cools the soil and reduces moisture loss. During drought, trees often hold steady while exposed plants struggle. Conditions stay more consistent under the protective canopy of a large sprawling tree.
They also help in winter. A canopy can trap heat and reduce wind, making it slightly warmer underneath. That small difference can make a big difference for marginally hardy plants like citrus.
Trees don’t just survive our conditions—they improve them.
What About Storms?
This is the biggest concern I hear, and it’s a fair one. But a few things are worth keeping in mind.
First, most trees don’t fail in storms. A strong, healthy tree can handle a lot.
Second, when trees do fail, it’s usually not random. The weakest trees are the first to come down first, and that comes down to a few key factors:
The right species
Research from the University of Florida has identified which trees are more wind-resistant. Choosing these trees makes a big difference.
The right size
Smaller trees pose less risk in storms than larger trees, especially closer to the house. They provide many of the benefits of larger trees, with less potential for catastrophic damage.
The right conditions
A tree that fits your site—your soil, light, and moisture—will be healthier and stronger over time, and healthier trees are more durable than stressed trees.
Get those right, and you reduce risk significantly
Choosing the Right Tree
Many problems can be solved by choosing the right tree for your needs.
Armed with the following information, the experts at Tallahassee Nurseries can help the right tree for your space.
How far will the tree be planted from structures, power lines, hardscapes, or any other high value asset?
How many hours of sun does the location get, and at what time of day?
What are general soil conditions? Sand, clay, wet, dry, on a slope, flat?
What do you want out of your new tree? Flowers, fall color, shade, curb appeal?
With these answers, you can narrow in on trees that will thrive—and stay low maintenance.
Trees Are an Investment
Trees aren’t high-maintenance. They’re front-loaded investments.
You give them some attention early, and in return, they provide decades of shade, comfort, and value—often without needing much from you. The right tree becomes the part of your landscape you think about the least, and benefit from the most. Even if you’re not ready to plant, it’s always a good time to plan.
