Scarlet Siren Nectarine: A Stunning Tree with Sweet Rewards
If you’re looking for a tree that turns heads and produces delicious fruit, the Scarlet Siren Nectarine is something special. This beautiful fruit tree is both ornamental and productive, offering bold seasonal color along with sweet, juicy nectarines. Best of all, it’s a Tallahassee Nurseries exclusive, discovered right here in North Florida and well adapted to our climate and soils.
A Tree That Steals the Show in Spring
In late February to early March, the bare branches become covered in vibrant pink flowers. The blooms are large and showy—every bit as impressive as ornamental flowering trees.
Just as the flowers begin to fade, something even more striking happens. Deep scarlet red leaves emerge, creating a brief but unforgettable overlap of bright pink blossoms and rich crimson foliage. Against the clear blue skies of early spring, the effect is dramatic and eye-catching.
The foliage maintains the rich red hue through spring and into early summer, forming a lush canopy of leaves. Even in autumn, Scarlet Siren adds beauty to the landscape with warm shades of gold and yellow fall color, sometimes touched with orange or red.
Perfect Size for Home Landscapes
Scarlet Siren grows quickly but stays manageable, typically reaching about 15 to 20 feet tall. That makes it a great fit for most home landscapes.
It’s also very flexible in how you grow it. If you prefer a tall flowering tree, you can prune it to create a higher canopy that’s easy to walk or mow beneath. If fruit production is your goal, you can prune it in an open-center style, similar to peaches or plums, to encourage larger harvests. And if you’d rather keep things simple, you can let it grow naturally into a full, bushy tree with a strong presence in the yard.
Sweet Nectarines in Summer
Scarlet Siren isn’t just beautiful—it’s productive. The tree is self-fruitful, meaning a single tree can produce fruit on its own. Even young trees have shown impressive fruit set. The nectarines are typically around three inches across, with crisp texture and sweet, juicy flesh that ripens in early summer.
For the biggest and best fruit, follow the basic care used for peaches and plums. One of the most important steps is thinning the fruit after it forms. If you remove some of the developing fruit as soon as it forms, the remaining nectarines receive more energy from the tree and grow larger, sweeter, and juicier.
If your main goal is ornamental beauty, simply let the tree do its thing. It will still produce plenty of smaller fruits—great for snacking, sharing with wildlife, or enjoying fresh from the tree.
Well Adapted to North Florida
Because Scarlet Siren was found in North Florida, it’s naturally suited to our region. It appears to be a low-chill nectarine, likely needing somewhere between 250 and 350 chill hours to bloom reliably.
That range works very well for our climate. It’s low enough that the tree blooms every year, but high enough that it doesn’t rush into bloom during the first warm spell of January. In recent seasons, blooms have consistently appeared in late February or early March, a timing that helps reduce frost risk.
